Radio report: Death threats over ‘Black Pete’ in the Netherlands

For years, the figure of Black Pete – or Zwarte Piet in Dutch – has been causing heated debates and even riots in the Netherlands. A UN commission had urged the iconic black face-painted figure be withdrawn, due to racism concerns. But when some primary schools did ban the character from upcoming Christmas celebrations, the decision was met with unrest, and not just in school playgrounds.
